Adab al-Zifaf fi al-Sunnah al-MutahharahNasir al-Din al-Albani
  1. Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am ruined!’ He asked, ‘What has ruined you?’ ʿUmar replied, ‘I turned my saddle last night1.’ The Prophet offered no response until the verse was revealed: ‘Your wives are your place of cultivation; so approach your place of cultivation however you wish’ (Qur’an 2:223). He then explained, ‘From the front or from the back, but avoid the anus and intercourse during menstruation.’2
(1) The expression “his saddle” (rahil) is a euphemism for his wife, indicating intercourse in her front while approaching her from the rear. Normally the man “mounts” the woman from the side of her face; when he approaches her from the back they said he “shifted his saddle.” The phrase may refer to his dwelling-place or to the actual camel saddle (known as the kur). See al-Nihaya. (2) Reported by al-Nasai, al-‘Asharah, 2:76; al-Tirmidhi, 2:162 (Bulaq ed.), Ibn Abi Hatim, 1:39; al-Tabarani, 3:156; and al-Wahidi, p. 53, all with a hasan chain; al-Tirmidhi likewise judged it hasan.
