Fourth: Umm Salamah, the Prophet’s wife, related:
I hung some gold ornaments1 around her neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered and turned away from her. I said, “Will you not look at her adornment?” He replied, “It is from your adornment that I am turning away.” [She said: so I cut them off, and he then turned his face toward me.]

with an authentic chain; it is likewise transmitted by al-Nasai 2/285 and al-Khatib 8/459, and by al-Bazzar (no. 3007) in similar wording, while al-Tabarani 23/282/641 provides an additional chain. The term “al-qalbayn” denotes a pair of bangles, and “mulawiyyayn” means “twisted.”
(1) Plural of shaʿira, an ornament fashioned like a barley grain.
(2) That is, the narrator is Ata ibn Abi Rabah, who relates the hadith from Umm Salama. Because he does not trace this portion back to her, the report here is mursal and therefore weak. Layth ibn Abi Sulaym did connect the chain—“from Ata, from Umm Salama…”—as recorded by Ahmad 6/322 and al-Tabarani, al-Kabir 23/281, yet Layth’s retention is unreliable and Ata never heard directly from her. Even so, this segment remains authentic: the mursal chain is sound, it has also come down with a connected isnad as noted, and it enjoys two additional connected corroborations—from Asma and Abu Hurayra—that will be cited below.
