(1) The hadith was recorded by al-Nasa’i 2/284 and 284–285; Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi 1/354; al-Hakim 3/152–153 (through al-Tayalisi’s route); al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, no. 1448; Ibn Rahuyah in his Musnad 4/237/1–2; and likewise by Ahmad 5/278. Its chain is sound and uninterrupted, and Ibn Hazm (10/84) also graded it sahih. Al-Hakim remarked, “Authentic according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi agreed. Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri (1/237) noted: “Al-Nasa’i transmitted it with a sound chain.” Al-Iraqi (4/205) wrote: “… with a good chain.” The first additional phrase occurs in all of these versions except one narration of al-Nasa’i; the second addition is found in his version as well as in al-Tayalisi and others, while the remaining phrases are preserved by Ahmad and by al-Harbi in al-Gharib 5/184/2 (in abridged form) and by al-Tabarani, who did not quote the wording in full. There is another chain through Abu Asma al-Rahabi from Thawban, narrated by al-Ruyani in his Musnad 14/126/1; this version lacks the words, “Would it please you …,” yet its chain too is sahih. Note that Ibn Hazm (10/84) cited only al-Nasa’i’s version, which omits the addition “of gold” and the Prophet’s words to Bint Hubayra, “Would it please you that Allah place rings of fire on your hand?,” and therefore he answered the hadith by saying:
