Second: It is narrated from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the daughter of Hubayrah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with large gold rings on her hand. The Prophet began tapping her hand with a small stick he was carrying and said, “Would it please you if Allah were to place rings of fire on your hand?”
She then went to Fatimah to complain. Thawban continues: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Fatimah’s house while I was with him, and she was holding a gold necklace she had just taken from her neck. She said, “Abu al-Hasan—meaning her husband ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)—gave this to me as a gift,” while the chain was still in her hand.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Fatimah, would you like people to say, ‘Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, is holding a chain of fire’?” He then reprimanded her severely [1] and left without even sitting down.
Fatimah immediately sold the necklace, bought a slave with its price, and set the slave free. When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) he said, “Praise be to Allah who has saved Fatimah from the Fire.”
