In addition to the reports cited earlier, there are further narrations:
- Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
“When the Emigrants settled in Medina among the Helpers, they married women from them. The Emigrants 1 were accustomed 2 to approaching their wives from the rear (while still in the vagina), whereas the Helpers 3 did not 4. One of the Emigrants wanted this practice with his wife, but she refused until she could consult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She went to him yet felt too shy to ask, so I asked him on her behalf. Thereupon the verse was revealed: ‘Your wives are your place of cultivation; so approach your place of cultivation however you wish’ (Qur’an 2:223). He then said, ‘Only through a single passage 5.’ 6”
(1) That is, the women of the Muhajirun (Emigrants) and the Ansar (Helpers).
(2) From the root tajbiya, meaning to lie face-down on the ground. Al-Qamus says: “jaba, tajbiya: he put his hands on his knees and bent forward until his face touched the ground.”
(3) Meaning a single passageway. Al-Nihaya states: “al-simam is what is used to seal an opening; the private part was therefore called by this name.”
(4) Reported by Ahmad, 6:305, 310–318 (his full wording); al-Tirmidhi, 3:75, who declared it sahih; Abu Ya‘la, 1:329; Ibn Abi Hatim, Tafsir, 1:39 (Mahmudiyya ed.); and al-Bayhaqi, 7:195. Its chain is sound according to the criteria of Muslim.
