Fifth: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not wear silk or gold.” 1
Sixth: “Whoever from my community wears gold and dies while still wearing it, Allah will forbid him the gold of Paradise.” 2
Moreover, the hadith also affirms the permissibility of wearing a silver ring; its unqualified wording implies that this is lawful even if the ring weighs more than one mithqal (about 4.25 g). The report that adds, “…and do not let it reach a full mithqal,” is weak, as I have shown in my book al-Ahadith al-Daifa wa-l-Mawdua wa Atharuha al-Sayyi fi al-Ummah (Weak and Fabricated Hadiths and Their Harmful Effects on the Community). So far, one thousand such narrations have been published from that work in four volumes, and I have several times that number still in my possession.
(1) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 5/261, from Abu Umamah, marfuʿ, with a good chain.
(2) Reported by Ahmad, nos. 6556 and 6947, from Abd Allah ibn Amr, marfuʿ, with a sound chain; Shaykh Ahmad Muhammad Shakir discussed it in his annotated edition of the Musnad and did so admirably.
