Fourth: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr relates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a gold ring on one of his Companions. The Prophet turned away, so the man removed it and threw it down. He then made a ring of iron, whereupon the Prophet said, “This is worse; this is the adornment of the people of Hellfire.” The man discarded that one as well and made a ring of silver1, and the Prophet left him without further remark2.
(1) That is: silver.
(2) Reported by Ahmad, nos. 6518 and 6680, and by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, no. 1021, through the chain of Amr ibn Shuayb from his father; this isnad is hasan, and Ibn Rajab makes no comment on it in Sharh al-Tirmidhi, 2/90. The hadith is sound, for Ahmad also transmits it in the Musnad, no. 6977, by another route from Ibn Amr, though that route is weak. It is further corroborated by a narration of Umar ibn al-Khattab, reported by Ahmad in the Musnad, no. 132, and by al-Uqayli, p. 416; its transmitters are trustworthy despite a break in the chain. Al-Uqayli provided a connected isnad, but it is weak; Ibn Saad, 4/281, recorded it as mawquf. A second corroboration comes from Buraida, recorded by the compilers of the Sunan and by al-Dulabi, 2/16; Ibn Hibban declared it sahih, yet Ibn Hajar judged it weak in Fath al-Bari, 10/256, because it contains Abu Tayba Abd Allah ibn Muslim al-Marwazi.
