Nor is it hidden that when a man shaves his beard—the very feature by which Allah has distinguished him from a woman—he is engaging in the most blatant form of imitation of her. We hope that the proofs we have presented will persuade those afflicted with this violation; may Allah protect us and them from all that He dislikes and does not approve of.
6 – The engagement ring
Sixth: Some men wear a gold ring that they call an “engagement ring.” Beyond being an imitation of the disbelievers, this practice itself was adopted from the Christians1
in which a Muslim may choose as he pleases! Yet they say this while knowing full well that letting the beard grow is part of the fitra (the God-given natural disposition), as the Prophet ﷺ stated in the hadith related by Muslim and others. By its very nature the fitra is not subject to alteration in the Sharia, for Allah says: “The fitra of Allah upon which He created mankind—there is no changing the creation of Allah. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know” (Q 30:30). O Allah, keep us firm with the steadfast word in this life and in the Hereafter.
(1) The practice goes back to an old custom of theirs: during the ceremony the bridegroom would place the ring on the tip of the bride’s left thumb saying, “In the name of the Father,” then move it to the index finger saying, “and of the Son,” then to the middle finger saying, “and of the Holy Spirit,” and when he said “Amen” he finally set it where it now remains.
ولا يخفى أن في حلق الرجل لحيته - التي ميزه الله بها على المرأة - أكبر تشبه بها فلعل فيما أوردنا من الأدلة ما يقنع المبتلين بهذه المخالفة عافانا الله وإياهم من كل ما لا يحبه ولا يرضاه
٦- خاتم الخطبة:
السادس: لبس بعض الرجال خاتم الذهب الذي يسمونه بـ "خاتم الخطبة" فهذا مع ما فيه من تقليد الكفار أيضا - لأن هذه العادة سرت إليهم من النصارى١
التي يخير فيها المسلم!
يقولون هذا وهم يعلمون أن إعفاء اللحية من الفطرة كما قال ﷺ على ما رواه مسلم وغيره والفطرة لا تقبل التغيير شرعا كما قال ﷿: ﴿فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا لا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ فاللهم ثبتنا بقولك الثابت في الحياة الدنيا وفي الآخرة.
١ ويرجع ذلك إلى عادة قديمة لهم عندما كان العروس يضع الخاتم على رأس إبهام العروس اليسرى ويقول: باسم الأب. ثم ينقله واضعا له على رأس السبابة ويقول: وباسم الابن. ثم يضعه على رأس الوسطى ويقول: وباسم الروح القدس وعندما يقول آمين
