—or so they claim! Yet this is among the practices that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, declared forbidden and upon whose doers he invoked a curse, saying:
“Allah has cursed the women who tattoo 1 and those who ask to be tattooed 2, [those who attach hair extensions 3], and the eyebrow-pluckers 4 [and those who have their eyebrows plucked,”}
(1) Plural of washima, the active-participle form of “washm” (tattooing): it is the act of pricking the skin with a needle or similar instrument until blood comes out, then filling the spot with kohl or the like so that it turns bluish-green.
(2) Plural of mustawshima, the woman who asks to be tattooed.
(3) Reported by al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud; see al-Silsila al-Sahiha, no. 2797.
(4) Plural of namisa, the woman who performs namas; mutanammisat is the plural of mutanammisa, the one who requests it. Namas denotes removing facial hair with tweezers, as stated in al-Nihaya and other sources. Mentioning “face” is because it is the usual place, not a limitation; the notion that “namas is confined to plucking the eyebrows to raise or level them” is addressed in our notes on this hadith in Takhrij al-Halal, no. 97.
