and may He cool your eyes and exalt your rank.” She said: He did not answer me! I could read anger on his face. He hurried into the house, took hold of the tapestry and yanked it1 until it tore. Then he said, “Are you draping the wall with a covering that has images on it? Allah has not commanded us, out of what He has provided for us, to clothe stones and clay.”2 She added: So we cut it up and turned it into two cushions.
(1) i.e., he pulled it. Al-Nihaya states: “al-jabdh is a dialectal form of al-jadhb (pulling); some say the letters have been transposed.”
(2) Al-Bayhaqi says: “This wording shows that adorning walls with cloth is disliked, although the chains of transmission we have cited indicate that the dislike arose because the cloth contained images.” I reply: the aversion concerns both matters—the reason given by Al-Bayhaqi and the very act of covering the wall itself—as is explicit in two additional phrases occurring in some narrations: the first, “it contains an image,” and the second, “Are you draping the wall?” This version thus joins both causes, yet Al-Bayhaqi is excused, for it had not reached him.
