(1) Al-Qamus explains al-namat as “the outer cover of a mattress” or “a kind of rug.” (2) That is, “the side.” Al-Nihaya states: al-ʿard (with ḍamma) denotes the side or edge of anything. I note that Al-Nihaya does not cite this hadith under that entry, yet the wording plainly belongs there, as confirmed by another report of ʿAʾisha in which Anas says: “ʿAʾisha had a qiram with which she screened one side of her house,” recorded by al-Bukhari 10/321. I later found that al-Khattabi transmitted the hadith in his Gharib al-Hadith with the wording al-ʿard, then commented: “This is an error; the correct form is al-ʿars—spelled with sad without dots and an open ʿayn—which refers to a beam laid cross-wise on a house when roofing, over which the shorter timbers are placed.” Allah knows best.
