- Draping the walls with carpets:
The second practice that should be avoided is covering the walls with carpets or similar fabrics—even if they are not made of silk—for this is extravagance and an unwarranted ornamentation.
—The five Companions are:
1. Abu Hurayra; the version cited here is his. It is recorded by Abu Dawud 2/189, al-Nasa’i 2/302, al-Tirmidhi 4/21, declared authentic by Ibn Hibban (no. 1487), and appears in Ahmad 2/305-308, 478; ‘Abd al-Razzaq, al-Jami‘, no. 68; Ibn Qutayba, Gharib al-Hadith 1/100/1; al-Baghawi, Sharh al-Sunna 3/218/1; and al-Diya’, al-Mukhtara 10/107/1—all with sound chains.
2–3. ‘A’isha and Maymuna; their narrations are found in Muslim 6/156, Abu ‘Awana’s Sahih 8/249–253/2, Ahmad 6/142-143, 330, al-Baghawi 3/217/1, likewise al-Tahawi, Mushkil al-Athar 1/376-377, and Abu Ya‘la 333/2, 335/2.
4. Abu Rafi‘; reported by al-Ruyani 25/139/2. In his version he also relates the second supplementary phrase and the final addition that comes from Maymuna, while the preceding addition—with the other wording from ‘A’isha—and the remainder are transmitted on Abu Hurayra’s authority by Ahmad and others.
5. Usama b. Zayd; related by al-Tahawi with a good (hasan) chain.
