Some contemporary writer tried to explain Aishah’s hadith by saying: “This picture contradicts reality and depicts a falsehood, for no winged horses exist; that is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked it.” I reply: This explanation is unsound for several reasons. First, nothing in the hadith even hints that the Prophet’s disapproval stemmed from the image’s being unrealistic. Rather, the text explicitly indicates another cause: his statement, “Angels do not enter a house that contains pictures.” He mentioned pictures in absolute terms, without restricting the ruling to any particular type. Accordingly, he tore down the curtain and ordered its removal to eliminate the cause that keeps the angels from entering the house—an exceedingly clear rationale. Second, if the problem had truly been the picture’s inconsistency with reality, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not have approved Aishah keeping among her playthings a horse with two wings in another incident, as will be cited in the fifth hadith under issue no. 40. This refutes the writer’s claim and leaves the hadith intact, without any contradictory evidence. As for the hadith of Abu Talhah: “Angels do not enter a house that contains an image …”
