and for weeping over the deceased so long as it does not involve wailing.1
Fifth: Abū Balj Yahyā ibn Sulaym narrated: I said to Muhammad ibn Ḥāṭib, “I married two women, and at neither wedding was there any sound”—meaning that no duff was played. Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The distinguishing line between what is lawful and what is unlawful is the sound of the duff.’”2
Sixth: “Make the marriage publicly known.”3
(1) Reported by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi—the full wording and the alternative version are from the former—as well as by al-Nasa’i, 2/93, and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, no. 1221.
(2) Reported by al-Nasa’i, 2/91; al-Tirmidhi, 2/170, who graded it “hasan”; Ibn Majah and others; also by al-Hakim—whose wording is cited here—al-Bayhaqi, 7/289; Ahmad, 3/418; and Abu Ali al-Tusi in Mukhtasar al-Ahkam, 1/109–110. Al-Hakim declared its isnad “sahih,” a judgment endorsed by al-Dhahabi. In my view the chain is hasan, as I have explained in Irwa al-Ghalil, no. 1994.
(3) Reported by Ibn Hibban, no. 1285, and by al-Tabarani, 1/69/1.
