The additional wording is found in the versions of al-Darimi, Ibn al-Sunni, and al-Bayhaqi. Al-Hafiz commented: “Its transmitters are reliable, except that it is said al-Hasan did not hear from Aqil.” Some contemporary researchers reply: “This claim is unfounded, for al-Hasan heard from Companions older than Aqil.” I observe that al-Hasan—meaning al-Basri—is a well-known mudallis, and here he does not state that he heard the report directly from Aqil; accordingly the chain is classed as munqati (interrupted). Nevertheless, Ahmad relates it through another route from Aqil, so the hadith is strengthened by the combination of the two isnads. Allah knows best. I later found a third chain in al-Mawdih of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, 2/255, and in Ibn Asakir.
