“O Allah, bless them both, and bless their union for them.” 1
Third: ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
“The Prophet ﷺ married me. My mother came to me and led me into the house, where I found a number of women from the Helpers. They said,
‘With goodness and blessing, and with the best of good fortune.’” 2
Fifth: Abū Hurayrah reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ congratulated (rafaʾa) 3 someone who had just married, he would say:
(1) Reported by Ibn Saʿd, 8:20–21; al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam al-Kabir, 1:112/1, with a hasan chain; and by Ibn ʿAsakir, 12:88/2. The report has already been examined under the issue just mentioned.
(2) Meaning: on the finest fortune and share; a person’s taʾir (“bird”) refers to his allotted portion. The hadith is recorded by al-Bukhari 9:182, Muslim 4:141, and al-Bayhaqi 7:149.
(3) The verb raffaʾa—pronounced with a fatha on the ra, a doubled fa, and a closing hamza—means “he invoked a blessing,” used in place of the pre-Islamic congratulation bi-r-rafa wa-l-banin (“with prosperity and sons”). Because the phrase belongs to Jahiliyyah custom, the texts prohibit it. See Fath 9:182, where Ibn Hajar cites several hadiths on this prohibition, including the forthcoming report from al-Hasan.
