if permission was granted, he would enter; otherwise, he would depart.
On this occasion the Prophet ﷺ turned to leave, and Saʿd followed him, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! Every time you offered the greeting it reached my ears, and I did answer, but I did not let you hear me. I only wished to receive more of your salām and the blessing it carries. So please come in, O Messenger of Allah.”
He then ushered him into the house, brought out some raisins, and the Prophet ﷺ ate. When he had finished, he said:
“May the righteous eat your food, may the angels invoke blessings upon you, and may those who are fasting break their fast with you.” 1
(1) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad, 3:138; Abu Ali al-Saffar in his Hadith collection; al-Tahawi, Sharh mushkil al-athar, 1:498–499 (the additional wording cited here comes from this version); al-Bayhaqi, Sunan al-kubra, 7:287; and Ibn Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq, 7:59–60—with a sound chain of transmission. A shorter form is in Abu Dawud, Sunan, 2:150, and in Ibn al-Sunni, no. 476 (supplication only). Al-Iraqi judged it sahih in his Takhrij, 2:12, as did Ibn al-Mulaqqin in al-Khulasa, and earlier Abd al-Haqq in his Ahkam, 2:194; the last two works preserve the opening phrase “he broke his fast…”. It is also transmitted by Ibn Majah, 1:531; al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam, 69:204/2; and al-Khatib, al-Muwadih, 2:72, through Musab b. Thabit from Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr, who said: “The Messenger of Allah broke his fast at Saʿd b. Muʿadh’s house and said…”—but Musab is weak, as al-Busiri states in al-Zawaʾid.
