Hammad ibn Zayd also transmits it from him with similar wording as a mawqūf report, and this is the correct version, for Hammad ibn Zayd heard it from ʿAṭāʾ before the latter became confused. Therefore we included it in the main text; it is the other narration from Ibn Masʿūd.
I later found another chain for it on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd in al-Thaqafī; see the entry, “When one of you marries…” in the Maʿjam.
There is a marfūʿ corroborating report from Salmān recorded by Ibn ʿAdī 71/2, Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Iṣbahān 1/56, and al-Bazzār in his Musnad with a weak isnād that I discussed in Maʿjam al-Ḥadīth under the wording, “When one of you marries…”. Ibn ʿAsākir 7/2091-2 also narrated it, both from him and from Ibn ʿAbbās.
ʿAbd al-Razzāq 6/192 reports from Ibn Jurayj who said:
“I was told that Salmān al-Fārisī married a woman. When he came to her he stopped at the doorway and saw that the house was draped. He said, ‘I do not know whether your house has a fever or whether the Kaʿbah has been moved to Kindah! By Allah, I will not enter until its curtains are torn down.’ When they took them down … he entered … then went to his wife, placed his hand on her head … and said, ‘Will you obey me, may Allah have mercy on you?’ She replied, ‘You are seated in the place of one who is obeyed.’ He said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me: “If you ever marry, let the very first thing on which the two of you come together be obedience to Allah.”’”
