Al-KāfīIbn Abd al-Barr

thus, Mālik held that a repetition is not required if the error only becomes apparent after the prayer’s time has elapsed. Yet completeness may still be sought while the time remains: by analogy with a person who prayed alone and then finds a congregation performing the same prayer within its time, he repeats it with them—except for Maghrib, according to Mālik. Once the time has passed he may not repeat it with a congregation; at most, as a recommended act, he may repeat it within the time if, despite earnest effort, he had ended up with his back to the qiblah or had veered greatly eastward or westward.
