Chapter: Animals whose sale is permissible and those whose sale is not

Animals fall into two categories: those whose flesh is eaten and those whose flesh is not. Every creature whose meat is lawful to consume may likewise be bought and sold. As for animals that may not be eaten, they are of two kinds: those from which a benefit is obtained while they are alive, and those from which no benefit is obtained at all. Anything that offers a tangible benefit—such as riding, adornment, hunting, and similar uses for human beings—may be sold and purchased, with one sole exception: the dog, for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) prohibited selling it.
