Chapter: Maintenance of Slaves and Animals
A master is obliged to provide for every slave he owns—male or female, young or old—in a manner that accords with his own means and with the slave’s condition, following accepted custom. He may not burden a slave with work that he cannot continuously endure. Likewise, a man is compelled either to feed his beasts of burden or to pasture them when pasturage will suffice; otherwise he must sell them or slaughter those whose slaughter is lawful. He may never leave them to be tormented by hunger or any other form of mistreatment.
