Chapter: The states of ritual impurity that oblige wudu and those that do not, in so far as they affect one’s readiness for prayer
According to the people of Medina—Mālik and his disciples—four kinds of occurrences require wudu:
- The first is anything that emerges from either of the two natural passages: wind, feces, urine, madhy (pre-ejaculatory fluid), or wady (a thick, white fluid). Semen is excluded, for it necessitates ghusl (full ritual bath). The proof is the Almighty’s statement: “or if one of you has come from relieving himself” (Quran 5:6). This is a polite reference to everything that usually issues from the two orifices—whatever appears habitually and is commonly known. It does not include matters that leave them only rarely or sporadically, such as blood, worms, a harmless pebble, and the like, because, in Mālik’s view, the verse alludes to what is constantly and repeatedly encountered, not to what is unfamiliar.
