if they emerge seeking redress for wrongs done to them; in that case, their grievance is investigated, they are reinstated under the covenant, and justice is granted to them against whoever oppressed them. None of them may be taken as slaves; they remain free. If only some of them violate the treaty while others do not, those who have not violated it remain upon their pact and are not held liable for the breach of others. Their adherence to the covenant is recognized by their disavowal of the offenders. Anyone who procrastinates in paying the poll-tax (jizya) is disciplined for his delay, and the payment is taken from him in a state of humility.
