his camel, according to Mālik, who based this ruling on the opinion of Ibn ʿUmar. Other scholars disagreed and allowed it, following ʿUmar’s view instead. Mālik does, however, permit a muhrim to flick leeches off his riding beast, his camel, or himself. In Mālik’s judgment it is impermissible to kill hornets, bedbugs, or flies; whoever does so must feed the poor with whatever food is readily available. Whoever kills a single locust must give a handful of food, and if he kills many locusts he must give food equivalent to their value. The jurists other than Mālik see no objection to a muhrim’s killing any wild or noxious land creature, or any other vermin, provided it is not edible game.
