Chapter: The fast of the traveller, the sick person, and anyone who has an excuse such as unconsciousness and the like.
A traveller may not break the fast except on a journey for which the prayers may be shortened; the requisite distance was discussed earlier in the Book of Prayer. Likewise, if while travelling he intends to settle somewhere for four days or more, he must fast. The traveller is free to choose between fasting and breaking the fast; should he fast while on the road, it suffices, and in our view fasting is preferable to breaking the fast for anyone who is able. It is impermissible for him to observe a voluntary fast while travelling yet neglect the obligatory fast of Ramadan.
The traveller must not break the fast until he has actually set out. No one may go to bed intending to break the fast while still at home, merely because he plans to travel the next day. Whoever chooses to fast in Ramadan during his journey is bound by that choice.
