Al-Ṭabarī also narrated—through Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, from Ashhab, from Mālik—that he said, “Yes, it is obligatory.”
Ziyād ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān’s Samaʿ likewise reports that Mālik was asked about the meaning of the divine command, “Establish the prayer and give the zakah” (Q 2:43): which form of zakah is joined to the prayer in this verse?
He replied, “It is the zakah due on every type of wealth: on gold, silver coin, fruit, grain, livestock, and the zakat al-Fiṭr.”
He then recited, “Take from their wealth a charity by which you cleanse them and purify them, and pray for them…” (Q 9:103).
