the sound could still carry that far; and Allah knows best.

The Friday prayer is likewise obligatory for the residents of a village when it is large—possessing a market, a congregational mosque, streets, and a population that can establish the prayer. According to many jurists that number is twenty. Mālik himself set no fixed figure, while some of his followers required thirty; certain scholars of Madinah said forty; others said fifty; and still others allowed it with only three worshippers besides the imam. There are further opinions as well, and it is safest to take the stricter view.

The Friday obligation does not apply to small hamlets, nor to tent-dwelling Bedouins and those who live in reed or cloth shelters.

Friday prayer has specific conditions without which it is not complete: a settled town (or any comparable place of permanent residence), an imam, a sermon, a congregation, the proper time, the designated day, and—according to Mālik—a mosque or, if that is unavailable, a place that serves in its stead.

The prayer remains valid even without the presence of the ruler, but it is not valid without a sermon, without a congregation, or without an imam who leads it from beginning to end—except for a late-comer who catches one rakʿah. It may not be performed before the sun passes the zenith, and it must be held inside the mosque, in its courtyards, or on the adjoining pathways, provided nothing blocks people from entering.

Taking a ritual bath for Friday is a sunnah, not an obligation, as I have detailed in al-Tamhīd. No one should perform this bath before dawn, and in Mālik’s view it is only proper when it is combined with setting out for the prayer. If someone bathes after dawn and then proceeds to the mosque, Mālik disliked that departure time, yet the bath still counts because it is linked to the act of going.

What Mālik prefers is that a person bathe and leave at the customary time. If his departure is delayed so that it is no longer connected to the bath, he should repeat the bath when he finally sets out; and if he fails to do so he is
