“…the blessing of food lies in washing before it and after it. Whoever goes to bed while the grease or odor of food is still on his hand and then suffers some harm has only himself to blame.”

Hospitality is one of the most honorable concerns and finest traits of character. Its confirmed sunnah is for a day and a night, and its outer limit is three days. Anyone who fails to honor his guest or his neighbor merits censure, and whoever keeps back from his guest a better portion of food than what he serves him has not truly honored him.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest with his ‘guest’s due’ for one day and one night,” meaning that he should do everything in his power to show full generosity. During the next two days he need only provide what is easy for him, and it is not permissible for the guest to remain beyond that and impose hardship on his host.

A person may eat without permission from the house of his father, mother, brother, paternal uncle, paternal aunt, maternal uncle, maternal aunt, or close friend whatever he knows they are pleased for him to take and whose absence they would not mind.

When putting on sandals or leather socks one should begin with the right foot, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved to start with the right in all his affairs. Thus the right foot enters first and is removed last so that it retains the distinction of remaining adorned longer. It is permissible to put on one’s footwear while standing—this applies to both sandals and leather socks—whether one puts them on successively or both together. There is likewise no harm in eating or drinking while standing, particularly when it is only a light meal or drink.
