Al-KāfīIbn Abd al-Barr

they pay no heed to his words. The deputy imam therefore rises by himself, makes up whatever cycles he still owes, and then pronounces the closing salām with the congregation.

If, however, the worshippers are uncertain, they rise with him; he leads them in one additional cycle, reciting only the Opening Chapter (al-Fātiḥa), for this is the last cycle of their prayer. He then rises again while the congregation remains seated and performs one more cycle for himself, in which he recites al-Fātiḥa and another surah, because for him it counts as make-up. Before the salām he performs the prostration of forgetfulness on account of having omitted the surah after al-Fātiḥa in one of the two cycles he was making up, and on account of his standing for a second cycle—seeing that the first imam had completed only one, whereas this deputy has now stood for a second.

He recites the tashahhud in the prostrations that come after the salām. As for the prostrations before the salām, he may either recite the tashahhud or omit it; both practices are reported from Mālik.
