one-third of what remains after the husband or wife has received the spousal share, while the father receives the other two-thirds of that remainder. No grandmother inherits alongside the mother, and nothing reduces her portion from one-third to one-sixth except a child, a grandchild through a son—whether male or female—or two or more brothers and sisters. In that case the siblings do indeed relegate her share from one-third to one-sixth, yet they themselves inherit nothing; this occurs when the deceased is survived by both of his parents as well as siblings. The mother’s share is never increased beyond one-third, nor is it ever decreased below one-sixth, except when it is proportionally reduced by ʿawl (the doctrine of increase).
