Mukhtasar al-Uluww lil-Ali al-AzimA-Dhahabi

12- I say: In his work it only appears in muʿallaq form, whereas the author of the original book cites it—after “p. 82-86”—with a complete chain that is fuller than the wording found here. The inclusion of the phrase “al-dār” in that version is anomalous, as I have shown in my notes on the abridgement I prepared of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī at the beginning of the Book of Monotheism; that abridgement, by Allah’s grace and bounty, is now nearly finished. The ḥadīth of Thābit from Anas has another route that will appear later in this book under no. 81. Al-Dārimī recorded it in his Refutation of al-Marīsī (p. 14), and Aḥmad related it in his Musnad (281-282, 295-296) on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās and others. Abū Jaʿfar also reproduced it in al-ʿArsh (fol. 113/1). A further corroborating report comes from Abū Hurayrah in his lengthy ḥadīth on the Day of Gathering, which Abū Shaykh included in al-ʿAẓamah (fol. 66/1, 72/1).

17- Anas reported that Mālik ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah told him that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ related to him the events of the night on which he was taken on the Night Journey:

“While I was in the Ḥaṭīm—Qatādah may have said: in the Ḥijr—reclining, a visitor came to me….” He then narrated the story, in which he said:

“Then I was brought a mount smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey, white, placing its hoof where its gaze ended. I mounted it and Gabriel travelled with me until he brought me to the lowest heaven. He sought entry and it was asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ They asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad.’ They asked, ‘Has he indeed been sent?’ He answered, ‘Yes.’ It was said, ‘Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival!’ and the gate was opened. When I entered, there was Adam. Gabriel said, ‘This is your father Adam; greet him.’ I greeted him and he returned the greeting, then said, ‘Welcome to the righteous son and righteous Prophet.’

“We then ascended until we reached the second heaven. Gabriel sought entry, and it was asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ They asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad.’ The gate was opened, and when I entered there were John and Jesus—cousins on their mothers’ side. Gabriel said, ‘This is John and Jesus; greet them.’ I greeted them and they returned the greeting, saying, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet.’

“Then he took me up to the third heaven and sought entry. It was asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ They asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad.’ They asked, ‘Has he already been sent?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ They said, ‘Welcome to him; how excellent is his coming!’ and the gate was opened. When I entered, there was Joseph. Gabriel said, ‘This is Joseph; greet him.’ I greeted him and he returned the greeting, saying, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet.’

“Then we ascended until we came to the fourth heaven, and Gabriel sought entry. It was asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘Gabriel.’ They asked, ‘And who is with you?’ He said—”
