Mukhtasar al-Uluww lil-Ali al-AzimA-Dhahabi

Abū al-Ḥasan was at first a Muʿtazilī, having studied under Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī. He later repudiated his teacher, refuted him, and became a theologian championing the Sunnah. In most matters he agreed with the ḥadith masters, as we have already cited from him: he transmitted their consensus on these points and declared his conformity with them. Exceptionally bright, he learnt the science of tradition from the ḥāfiẓ Zakariyyā al-Sājī. He died in 324 AH at the age of sixty-four—may Allah have mercy on him.
If our own theologians had stopped at these positions of Abū al-Ḥasan and held fast to them, they would have done well. Instead, they plunged into issues as the ancient philosophers had done, trailing after Greek logic, and in so doing they met nothing but calamity—Allah is our refuge.
278 – Al-Tabyīn, p. 129.
279 – This implies that he disagreed with the ḥadith scholars on certain questions; Ibn ʿAsākir likewise hinted at this when he said earlier, “He concurs with them in most of the views held by the foremost worshippers.”
Some scholars stated the matter explicitly. Abū al-ʿAbbās, known as Qāḍī al-ʿAskar—one of the leading disciples of Abū Ḥanīfah (may Allah have mercy on him)—said:
“Most of al-Shāfiʿī’s followers have adopted the settled school of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī, yet some of our brethren from Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah judged Abū al-Ḥasan mistaken in certain issues, such as his assertion that ‘takwīn (creative bringing-into-being) and the thing created are one and the same,’ and the like.” Al-Tabyīn, pp. 139-140.
I (the author) say: Perhaps among those issues is his statement, “Istiwāʾ (rising over) is one of His attributes, and an act He performed in relation to the Throne that is called istiwāʾ.” Al-Tabyīn, p. 150.
121 – ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā al-Shiblī (247–334 AH).
Abū Bakr al-Shiblī (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the infirmary for treatment. The vizier ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā came to visit him. Shiblī asked, “What has your Lord been doing?” He replied, “The Lord is in heaven, decreeing and accomplishing.” Shiblī said, “I was asking about the lord you worship”—meaning the caliph al-Muqtadir—“not about the Lord you do not worship.” The vizier then said to one of those present, “Debate him,” so the man said to him:
