the Lord of all worlds in the Sunnah, and on what the messengers conveyed to their nations in affirming the attributes of the Lord. All praise, then, is due to Allah for Islam and for the Sunnah.
83 – Ḥarb al-Karmānī (d. 280 AH)
261 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥanẓalī, the ḥāfiẓ, said: Ḥarb ibn Ismāʿīl al-Karmānī wrote to me:
“The Jahmiyyah are the enemies of Allah. They claim that the Quran is created, that Allah did not speak to Moses, that He will not be seen in the Hereafter, that Allah has no location, and that He is neither upon the Throne nor the Footstool. They are unbelievers, so beware of them.”
Ḥarb was a repository of knowledge. He studied under Aḥmad and Isḥāq and was the leading scholar of Kirmān in his time; he is mentioned alongside al-Athram and al-Marūdhī. Al-Khallāl traveled to him and narrated from him extensively. He died in the late 270s AH.
241 – I say: Ascribing “place” to Allah, Exalted is He, is found neither in the Quran and the Sunnah nor in the statements of the Companions and the early generations. What accords with their path is to refrain from attributing it to Him, lest it suggest something unbefitting His majesty—bearing in mind that al-Karmānī’s wording is clarified by what follows.
84 – ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī, the ḥāfiẓ (d. 280 AH)
262 – ʿUthmān al-Dārimī said in his book “al-Naqd ʿalā Bishr al-Marīsī,” a single volume we heard from Abū Ḥafṣ ibn al-Qawwās:
“The Muslims are unanimously agreed that Allah is above His Throne, above His heavens.” He also said, “Allah, Exalted is He, is above His Throne and hears from above the Throne; nothing of His creation is hidden from Him and nothing stands between them and Him.”
Abū’l-Faḍl al-Furāt remarked, “We have not seen anyone like ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd, nor has he seen anyone like himself. He learned hadith from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and Ibn al-Madīnī, fiqh from al-Buwayṭī, and literature from Ibn al-Aʿrābī, and thus excelled in all these disciplines.”
