is what appears in the printed editions of the work.
222 – al-Ṭabarī recorded the report in his Tafsīr with a continuous chain through Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī from him.
I say: Abū Jaʿfar had a poor memory.
223 – al-Firyābī likewise transmitted it with an unbroken chain by way of Waraqāʾ, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from him; the narration has already passed under no. 35.
77 – Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī (221 – 264 AH)
252 – Ismāʿīl al-Anṣārī, author of “Condemning Kalām and Its Adherents,” said: Abū Yaʿqūb al-Qarrāb informed us; my grandfather informed us; I heard Abū al-Faḍl ibn Isḥāq; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Iṣbahānī narrated to me; I heard Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī—he was asked about the exegesis of the verse, “The Most Merciful rose over the Throne” (20:5). He became angry and said:
“Its explanation is exactly as you recite it¹: He is above His Throne, while His knowledge is in every place. Whoever says otherwise, upon him be the curse of Allah.”
224 – He is the imām and ḥāfiẓ of his age, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Qurashī, their client, al-Rāzī. His biography in the author’s Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ is filled with distinctions and virtues; see 2/124–125. He is different from the younger Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī, Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn, who is also an accomplished ḥāfiẓ; see Tadhkira 3/194.
225 – I say: I have not been able to identify this Abū al-Faḍl.
As for Abū Yaʿqūb al-Qarrāb, his name is Isḥāq ibn Abī Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sarakhsī, later al-Harawī, a ḥāfiẓ and imām who died in 429 AH.
His “grandfather” here means his maternal grandfather—the one the author lists among his teachers—Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣawayh. I have found no biographical entry for him. He is not Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ al-Jūrjīrī, whose notice appears in Akhbār Iṣbahān 2/272 and al-Shadharāt 2/328; that scholar belonged to an earlier generation and died in 330 AH.
