His creation; thereafter he set forth the rest of the creed.
217 – The compiler related it with his own chain back to Aḥmad al-Bāzūrī—so it appears in the printed edition with a bāʾ, whereas the manuscript reads “al-Yāzūrī” with a dotted yāʾ below. I have been unable to identify either this attribution or the man himself.
248 – ʿUmar ibn Tamīm al-Makkī said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Tirmidhī, who said: I heard al-Muzanī say, “A person’s tawḥīd (affirmation of Allah’s oneness) is not sound until he knows that Allah is upon the Throne with His attributes.” I asked, “Such as which attributes?” He replied, “Hearing, Seeing, Knowing, Powerful.” Ibn Mandah also recorded this in his History.
Al-Muzanī was the leading jurist of Egypt in his time and the most distinguished of al-Shāfiʿī’s students. He died in 264 AH, aged a little over eighty.
218 – I add: The compiler also transmitted it through this same route, but his chain contains men I do not know, such as ʿAmr ibn Tamīm al-Makkī.
75 – al-Dhuhlī (… – 258 AH)
249 – Al-Ḥākim said: I read, in the handwriting of Abū ʿAmr al-Mustahlī, that Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā was asked about the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah from the Prophet ﷺ: “So that the servant may know that Allah is with him wherever he is.” He answered, “Its intent is that Allah’s knowledge encompasses every place, while Allah Himself is upon the Throne.”
219 – This is a portion of the ḥadīth narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Ghāḍirī, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Ṭabarānī and others recorded it with a sound chain, as I clarified in al-Ṣaḥīḥah, no. 1046.
250 – Muḥammad ibn Naʿīm said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī declare, “Faith consists of words and deeds; it increases and decreases. The Quran is the speech of Allah, uncreated in every respect and however it is recited. We do not approve of entering into the novelties they have raised—discussions about sounds and pens.”
