309 – Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “I heard Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj say: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā say, ‘Whoever claims that, anywhere in the Quran from beginning to end, there is even a single verse that is created is a disbeliever.’
Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā was the unrivaled authority in precision, piety, and eminence in Nīshāpūr; scarcely did eyes behold his like. He narrated from Mālik, Khārijah ibn Muṣʿab, and the senior scholars, and he died in 226 AH.
53 – The scholar of Rayy, Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Rāzī (d. 221 AH)
210 – Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Yazīd al-Sulamī narrated to us; I heard my father say: I heard Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Rāzī—who had imprisoned a man for espousing Jahmī doctrine. When the man declared his repentance he was brought before Hishām to be tested. Hishām asked him, ‘Do you testify that Allah is over His Throne, distinct from His creation?’ The man replied, ‘I do not know what “distinct from His creation” means.’ Hishām said, ‘Take him back, for he has not yet repented.’
Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh was among the foremost jurists of the school of Abū Ḥanīfah. He studied under Muḥammad1 ibn al-Ḥasan, enjoyed extraordinary prestige and great reverence in his homeland, and died in 221 AH.
183 – I say: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Yazīd al-Sulamī and his father are unknown to me; Ibn Abī Ḥātim does not mention them in al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl. Al-Harawī transmitted this report through the same chain in Dhū al-Kalām, folio 120/1.
211 – Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: Abū Hārūn Muḥammad ibn Khalaf al-Jazzār narrated to us: I heard Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh say, ‘The Quran is the speech of Allah and is uncreated.’ A man asked him, ‘Does not Allah, exalted be He, say: “No new reminder comes to them from their Lord” (Q 21:2)?’ He replied, ‘“New” applies to us; with Allah it is not new.’
