164 – ʿAbd Allāh recorded the report in abridged form through several chains of transmission ⦗10–11⦘, and Ibn al-Qayyim likewise graded it authentic in his Juyūsh ⦗84⦘.
40 – Wahb ibn Jarīr, one of the foremost scholars of Basra (d. 206 AH)
188 – Muḥammad ibn Ḥammād said: “I heard Wahb ibn Jarīr declare, ‘Beware of the doctrine of Jahm! They strive to assert that there is nothing in the heaven. Such a notion comes only from Satan’s inspiration; it is nothing but outright disbelief.’”
165 – I add: The compiler cited this statement with his own chain, saying: “I read to Bilāl al-Ḥabashī; Ibn Rawāj informed you; al-Salafī narrated to us; Makkī al-Sallār told us; Abū Bakr al-Ḥayrī reported; Ḥājib ibn Aḥmad transmitted from Muḥammad ibn Ḥammād, who said …”
I remark: This isnād contains narrators unknown to me. Bilāl al-Ḥabashī is the eminent commander Abū ’l-Khayr al-Mughīthī, the Ethiopian eunuch in Ṣāliḥ’s service; Ibn al-ʿImād lists him under the deaths for 699 AH, noting: “He narrated from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Rawāj, and he died after the rout at Ramla, being over one hundred years old,” without mentioning any statement of reliability.
Ibn Rawāj is the ḥadith scholar Rashīd al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Ẓāfir ibn ʿAlī ibn Futūḥ al-Iskandarānī al-Mālikī, born 554 AH. He heard extensively from al-Salafī and others, produced many copies, compiled a collection of forty narrations, and was known for piety, jurisprudence, and humility. He died 648 AH, as recorded in al-Shadharāt ⦗5/242⦘.
Al-Salafī is the well-known ḥadith master. For Makkī al-Sallār I have found no biographical entry. Abū Bakr al-Ḥayrī is Qāḍī Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad al-Ḥarshī, the judge of Nīshāpūr, a man of vast learning and a teacher of al-Ḥākim and al-Bayhaqī; he died 421 AH. The remaining narrators above him are trustworthy. Ibn al-Qayyim declared this report sound in Juyūshuhu ⦗85⦘ and related that Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān al-Ḥāfiẓ cited it in his epistle on the Sunnah.
41 – Al-Aṣmaʿī, the leading scholar of his time
189 – It has been transmitted from him that he said: “A woman from the Jahmiyyah arrived, and when a man in her presence stated, ‘Allah is upon His Throne,’ she retorted, ‘That would make Him bounded.’”
