the common folk would secretly accept such a notion; Allah knows best.
160- I say: ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad recorded it in al-Sunnah (pp. 11–12), and through his route the author cited it, although here—and elsewhere—he titled the work al-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah. ʿAbd Allah said: “ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us; Shādh ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us.” Abū Dāwūd likewise produced it in al-Masāʾil (p. 268): “Aḥmad ibn Sinān told us; I heard Shādh ibn Yaḥyā.” I say: This chain is good; a number of reliable transmitters narrated from Shādh ibn Yaḥyā, and Aḥmad spoke well of him. Al-Bukhārī quoted this report positively in Afʿāl al-ʿIbād, saying: “Yazīd ibn Hārūn warned against the Jahmites, saying…,” and then he cited it.
37- Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍubʿī, the scholar of Basra (122–208 AH)
183- ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim said: My father narrated to us, saying: I was informed that Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍubʿī, when he mentioned the Jahmites, said:
“They are worse in doctrine than the Jews and the Christians. The Jews, the Christians, and the followers of every religion have agreed with the Muslims that Allah is above the Throne, whereas they say: ‘He is on nothing.’”
38- Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, the scholar of Kufa (127–197 AH)
184- Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: Wakīʿ narrated to us from Isrāʾīl the ḥadith, “When the Lord sits on the Footstool.” A man present with Wakīʿ shuddered, so Wakīʿ became angry and said: “We found al-Aʿmash and al-Thawrī narrating these ḥadiths and they did not reject them.” Abū Ḥātim transmitted it from Aḥmad.
185- Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Tamīmī said: I heard Wakīʿ say: “Whoever doubts that the Quran is the speech of Allah—that is, uncreated¹—is a disbeliever, and whoever does not attest that it was sent down uncreated is, by unanimous agreement, a disbeliever.”
161- I say: Rather, ʿAbd Allah recorded it in al-Sunnah (p. 70) from his father Aḥmad. Yet the report from Isrāʾīl just mentioned is not authentic, for in addition to being mawqūf and not traced back to the Prophet, Isrāʾīl narrates it from Abū Isḥāq
