151- I say: Its chain of transmission is sound. Abū Qudāmah al-Sarkhasī is reliable and a ḥāfiẓ; his full name is ʿUbayd Allah ibn Saʿīd al-Yashkurī al-Sarkhasī. Zakariyyā ibn Dāwūd ibn Bakr is also trustworthy and is listed in al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl ⦗1/2/602⦘. Ibn Khuzaymah corroborated the report, and al-Bayhaqī reproduced it from his route in Al-Asmāʾ ⦗427–428⦘.
33- Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, one of the eminent authorities ⦗107–198 AH⦘.
172- Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Makkī al-Jawwāz¹ narrated to us; he said:
‘I saw Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and a man asked him, “Abū Muḥammad, what do you say about the Qurʾān?” He replied, “It is the speech of Allah— from Him it issued and to Him it will return.”’”
152- I say: This chain too is authentic. Al-Jawwāz is trustworthy and one of al-Nasāʾī’s teachers, and Ibn Mūsā has already been discussed. Al-Dārimī heard the same wording ⦗p. 100, Refutation of the Jahmiyyah⦘ from Isḥāq, from Sufyān; al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it ⦗p. 245⦘ through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh from his father, and there are other routes from Ibn ʿUyaynah as well.
173- Abū Bakr al-Khallāl said: “Ḥarb al-Kirmānī informed us; Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said:
‘For seventy years I have found the people—the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and those after them—saying: “Allah is the Creator, and everything besides Him is created, except the Qurʾān, for it is the speech of Allah; from Him it issued and to Him it will return.”’” 153
This report from Ibn ʿUyaynah has reached the level of tawātur.
153- I say: Its chain is sound, an unbroken series of reliable ḥuffāẓ. Al-Bukhārī stated at the beginning of The Creation of Actions: “Ḥakam ibn al-Ṭabarī narrated to me; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us: ‘I met our elders for seventy years—among them ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—and they used to say, “The Qurʾān is the speech of Allah and is not created.”’” Its chain is good.
154- I say: See Masāʾil Abī Dāwūd ⦗p. 265⦘ and Al-Sunnah by ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad.
