25- ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, one of the leading scholars … (d. 192 AH)
161- Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs was asked, “In our area there are people who say, ‘The Qur’an is created.’” He replied, “Are they Christians?” They said, “No.” He asked, “Jews?” They said, “No.” He said, “Magians?” They said, “No.” He asked, “Then who are they?” They answered, “Muslims.” He said, “They are not Muslims.” Then he recited, “In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Especially Merciful,” and declared, “Allah is not created, the All-Merciful is not created, the Especially Merciful is not created. Such people are heretics.”
142- I remark: Its chain of transmission is sound, and the author later refers to another isnād for it. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad recorded it in al-Sunnah ⦗8⦘: “Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me; Yahyā ibn Yūsuf al-Zammī narrated to us:
‘I was present with ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs when a man said to him, “Abū Muḥammad! In our vicinity there are people who say, ‘The Qur’an is created.’” He said, “Jews?” The man said, “No,” …’ and so on.”
I add: this second chain is also sound; its narrators are those relied upon in the Ṣaḥīḥ, and Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm is al-Dawraqi, the ḥāfiẓ. Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Abū Jaʿfar al-Baghdādī corroborated it in al-Bukhārī’s Khalq al-Afʿāl ⦗69, Hindiyyah edition⦘.
162- A similar report with a different isnād is also related from the Imām Ibn Idrīs al-Awdi, a man without equal in his time and of great stature.
26- Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan, the jurist of Iraq (131-189 AH)
163- Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim ibn ʿAṭiyyah said: I heard Abū Sulaymān al-Jawzajānī say: I heard Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan declare, “By Allah, I will not pray behind anyone who asserts, ‘The Qur’an is created,’ and whenever I am asked for a ruling on such a case, I order that the prayer be repeated.”
143- I remark: I do not know Abū Sulaymān al-Jawzajānī.
