Muṭīʿ saying:
“Woe to you! What makes you reject this matter? By Allah, there is nothing mentioned in the ḥadīth except that the Qur’an contains something even more firmly established. Allah the Exalted says:
‘Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing’ (Q 4:134);
‘Allah warns you about Himself’ (Q 3:28);
‘You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself’ (Q 5:116);
‘Then He rose over the Throne’ (Q 7:54);
‘The heavens will be rolled up in His right hand’ (Q 39:67);
‘What prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My two hands?’ (Q 38:75);
‘And Allah spoke to Moses with direct speech’ (Q 4:164);
‘O Moses, indeed I—yes, I—am Allah’ (Q 20:14).”
He went on in this vein from the late-afternoon prayer until sunset.
117- The compiler recorded it through Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī: “Hudbah ibn Khālid narrated to us: ‘I heard Salām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ…’” I say: this chain is sound.
9- Ḥammād ibn Salamah, the leading scholar of Basra (d. 167 AH).
139- He—may Allah have mercy on him—was an imam of the Sunnah, devoted to disseminating the ḥadīths on the Divine attributes, and a foremost authority in both knowledge and practice.
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mughīrah narrated: “Ḥammād ibn Salamah transmitted to us the ḥadīth about the Lord’s descent and said, ‘If you see anyone denying this, hold him suspect.’”
118- I say: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mughīrah—Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣaffār al-Munqarī—is trustworthy.
10- ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mājishūn, the jurist and muftī of Madinah alongside Mālik (d. 164 AH).
140- It is authentically reported from Ibn al-Mājishūn that he was asked about what the Jahmiyyah deny. He said:
“To proceed: I have understood your question concerning the matter in which the Jahmiyyah have followed one another in rejecting the attribute of the Almighty Lord, whose greatness surpasses all description and estimation, and before whose reality tongues fall silent….”
