Al-Bayhaqī recorded it in his work al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt ⦗1/408⦘.
122 – Abū Isḥāq al-Thaʿlabī, the Qur’anic exegete, related:
Al-Awzāʿī was asked about the Almighty’s words, “then He established Himself above the Throne,” and he replied, “He is upon His Throne just as He has described Himself.”
123 – Al-Walīd ibn Muslim asked Imām Abū ʿAmr al-Awzāʿī about the hadiths dealing with the divine attributes. He said, “Let them pass as they have come.”
Among this imām’s sayings is: “Hold fast to the reports transmitted from those who preceded you, even if people abandon you; and beware of men’s opinions, no matter how they adorn them with fine speech.”
104 – I say: Al-Ājurrī recorded it in al-Sharīʿah ⦗102⦘ with an authentic chain.
4 – Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān, the scholar of Khurāsān (d. 150 AH)
124 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated in his book al-Sunnah, from his father, through Nūḥ ibn Maymūn, from Bukayr ibn Maʿrūf, from Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān, concerning the verse, “No private conversation takes place among three but that He is their fourth” (58:7). He said, “He is upon His Throne, while His knowledge is with them.”
105 – I say: Its chain is sound. It is also found in al-Sunnah ⦗71⦘; Abū Dāwūd recorded it in his Masāʾil ⦗263⦘ from Imām Aḥmad; al-Lālakāʾī ⦗1/92/2⦘ and al-Bayhaqī ⦗430–431⦘ likewise transmitted it. In another version Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān narrates it from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, and that is the wording cited by al-Ājurrī ⦗289⦘. The author says in his abridgement, “This is firmly established from Muqātil.” The same report has already appeared in this book ⦗99⦘ through other chains.
