89 – Hadith of ʿAlī: “The first person to be clothed will be Abraham—he will be dressed in two qibṭiyyah garments—then the Prophet ﷺ will be clothed in a striped ḥulla, and he will stand to the right of the Throne.” This report is mawqūf.
79 – I say: its chain is sound. The original work (p. 85) cites it on the authority of Sufyān al-Thawrī, from ʿAmr ibn Qays, from al-Minhal ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, from ʿAlī. Ibn al-Mubārak also recorded it in al-Zuhd (pp. 105–106, no. 364, Naʿīm ibn al-Mubārak edition). Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr likewise transmitted it, narrating from Sufyān by the same route.
Abū Yaʿlā reproduced it in his Musnad (1/165–166) and al-Bayhaqī in al-Asmāʾ (p. 395) through two additional chains that all go back to Sufyān with the same wording.
I say: this isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Ḥāfiẓ stated in Fatḥ al-Bārī (11/332) that Ibn al-Mubārak recorded the report in al-Zuhd in an abridged mawqūf form, whereas Abū Yaʿlā transmitted it at greater length as marfūʿ.
I add: in the copy of Abū Yaʿlā’s Musnad available to me I have found it only in this same abridged, mawqūf form.
Al-Bayhaqī then produced a similar marfūʿ version from Ibn ʿAbbās. I remark: its transmitters are trustworthy except for Abū Qilābah al-Riqāshī—his name is ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad—about whom al-Ḥāfiẓ says in al-Taqrīb: “reliable, but prone to error; his memory declined after he settled in Baghdad.”
There is also a corroborating marfūʿ report from Ibn Masʿūd with similar wording. Aḥmad recorded it (1/398); its transmitters are those of Muslim, except that Saʿīd ibn Zayd—the brother of Ḥammād ibn Zayd—about whom al-Ḥāfiẓ says: “trustworthy yet commits slips.” Al-Saʿq ibn Ḥazn supplied a supporting route in al-Dārimī (2/325).
Thus these two marfūʿ ḥadiths corroborate the mawqūf report and place it, in effect, in the ruling of marfūʿ. Allah knows best. Al-Ḥākim provides yet another corroboration (4/568–569) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, which both he and al-Dhahabī declared authentic.
90 – Hadith of Abū Qatādah: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “Whoever grants his debtor a deferment, or forgoes the debt altogether, will be in the shade of the Throne on the Day of Resurrection.”
80 – I say: its chain is ṣaḥīḥ. Aḥmad and others recorded it, and it is cited in al-Targhīb (2/37).
