“Who is this righteous servant who has passed away? The gates of heaven have been opened for him and the Throne has shaken on his account.”
He (Jabir) said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—then went out and, behold, it was Saʿd. He sat at his grave … and he related the rest of the ḥadith.
It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī.
49- Al-Bukhārī also recorded it. I have cited it in my edition of Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim’s Takhrīj al-Sunnah, 562. Another transmission is with Aḥmad as well (3/327), and its chain is sound; Abū Jaʿfar ibn Abī Shaybah likewise related it in al-ʿArsh, folio 113/1.
64- Ḥadith of Anas: He said, “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, while the bier of Saʿd was set down: ‘The Throne of the Most Merciful shook for him.’” This is ṣaḥīḥ.
50- Muslim and others have transmitted it. See Takhrīj al-Sunnah, 561.
65- Ḥadith of Abū Saʿīd: The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “The Throne shook at the death of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh.” This ḥadith is ṣaḥīḥ.
51- It was recorded by Aḥmad and by Ibn Saʿd. See Takhrīj al-Sunnah, 564-567.
66- Ḥadith of Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr: I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say, “Indeed, the Throne shook at Saʿd’s passing.” Its chain is ḥasan.
67- Ḥadith of Rumaytha: I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—while, had I wished, I could have kissed the seal-ring for how close I was to him—saying, “The Throne of the Most Merciful shook,” meaning Saʿd ibn Muʿādh. The isnād is sound, and Ibn Mandah declared it authentic. There are further reports on this matter from Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, Ibn ʿUmar, Ḥudhayfah, Abū Hurayrah, Asmāʾ bint Yazīd, and Muʿayqib.
Thus the report is mutawātir; I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—truly said it.
