above all people.’ At that, the Muslim raised his hand and slapped the Jew. The Jew then went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him. The Prophet said:
‘Do not give me superiority over Moses. On the Day when people fall unconscious, I shall be the first to come round, and there I will see Moses grasping a side of the Throne. I do not know whether he was among those who fell unconscious and recovered before me, or whether he is one of those whom Allah has exempted.’
In another route from him—peace and blessings be upon him—with a similar wording it states:
The Prophet became angry and said, ‘Do not prefer one of Allah’s prophets over another.’ And in it: ‘When I find Moses holding the Throne, I do not know whether the swoon he experienced on the Day of the Mount sufficed for him, or whether he was raised up before me.’ In yet another wording: ‘The Trumpet will be blown and everyone in the heavens and on earth will fall unconscious, except those whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again and they will stand up, looking on. I shall be the first to be resurrected—or among the very first—and I will find Moses holding the Throne; I do not know whether…’ The ḥadith continues. Its authenticity is agreed upon.
62- Ḥadīth of Abū Saʿīd: A Jew mentioned Moses in a way that seemed to give him preference over our Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—so an Anṣārī struck him. The Jew came complaining to the Prophet, who said:
‘Do not discriminate among the prophets. I will be the first for whom the earth is split open, and I will see Moses clinging to one of the pillars of the Throne; I do not know whether he was raised up in the first blast or after me.’
Muslim transmitted from it the phrase: ‘Do not give preference among the prophets.’
48- So he said. Muslim also recorded it in full (7/102) with a similar wording, though within it he cross-refers to Abū Hurayrah’s narration that precedes it in his collection. Al-Bukhārī likewise recorded it in full in two places (2/89; 4/327), as did Aḥmad (3/33). Abū Dāwūd (468) narrated it in abridged form, which is also one of Aḥmad’s versions (3/31).
63- Ḥadīth of Jābir: He heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say, while the bier of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh was being carried on their shoulders, ‘The Throne of the Most Merciful shook for him.’ This is Muslim’s wording.
From another route Jābir said: Gabriel came to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and said:
