Mukhtasar al-Uluww lil-Ali al-AzimA-Dhahabi

on his camel. They said, “O Commander of the Believers, if only you would mount a dignified mule so that the great and noble among the people could receive you.” ʿUmar replied, “Shall I not point it out to you here? Indeed, authority comes from here,” and he gestured with his hand toward the sky. Its chain of transmission is as clear as the sun. 37

37- I say: Al-Dārimī recorded it (p. 105), as did he in al-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah (p. 26), and the author cites it through his own isnād from him; the chain is authentic according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs.

47- ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ghanm said: I heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb declare, “Woe to the judges on earth before the Judge in heaven on the day they meet Him—except for the one who enjoins justice, rules with truth, and never judges out of desire, kinship, hope, or fear, but holds the Book of Allah as a mirror before his eyes.” Ibn Ghanm added, “I later related this to ʿUthmān, Muʿāwiyah, Yazīd, and ʿAbd al-Malik.” Samawayh narrated it in his Fawāʾid.

38- I say: The author also transmitted it with his chain. Al-Dārimī (p. 104) produced a shortened version. Both isnāds are sound and their narrators reliable—on the condition that Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Tanūkhī reported it before confusion overtook him, and that, in my view, is more likely, because the transmitter from him is Abū Mushir, the very scholar who informed us of that confusion. It is therefore improbable that he would narrate from him in such a state, especially given his deep veneration for him. Abū Ḥātim said: “Abū Mushir used to rank Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz above al-Awzāʿī,” and it is obvious that this preference pertains only to his pre-confusion narrations; accordingly, his report from him must belong to that period—Allah knows best.

48- The ḥadīth of Ibn Masʿūd states: “The Throne is above the water, and Allah is above the Throne; none of your deeds is hidden from Him.” It was narrated by ʿAbd Allah, the son of Imām Aḥmad, in his al-Sunnah, by Abū Bakr ibn al-Munḏir, Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAssāl, Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī, Abū Shaykh, Abū al-Qāsim al-Lālakāʾī, Abū ʿUmar al-Ṭalamankī, Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī, and Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in their respective works, and its chain is sound.
