‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd:
“I dislike seeing a man idle, occupied neither with the affairs of this world nor with those of the Hereafter.”
Such people are among the people of the Fire, as indicated by the Prophet’s words, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the hadith narrated by Muslim in his Sahīh from ‘Iyād ibn Himār, who reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “The people of Paradise are of five kinds.” Among them he mentioned “the weak man who lacks the judgment to restrain himself—those among you who merely follow others, seeking neither family nor wealth.”
Anyone whose renunciation leads him to abandon commanded good deeds—in which case what he abandons is better than his renunciation—or to commit forbidden sins or lapse into laziness and idleness is among “the greatest losers in their deeds,” “those whose efforts are wasted in this worldly life while they think they are doing good.”
Whoever renounces what distracts him from his obligations or leads him into forbidden acts is among those who follow a middle course, the people of the right. Whoever renounces what distracts him from recommended deeds and higher ranks is among those who are foremost, taking the lead in goodness.
This is a brief summary of renunciation. It has become clear that the primary aim is to do what has been commanded, since renunciation helps one to do so. This is the point intended here. And Allah knows best.
