And likewise, some of the Successors are reported to have held that Allah cannot be seen and to have interpreted His words:

“Some faces on that Day will be radiant,”

“looking at their Lord,”

as meaning that they will be awaiting their Lord’s reward, as reported from Mujāhid and Abū Sālih.

Or someone may believe that the deceased is not punished on account of the weeping of the living, because he believes that His words:

“No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another,”

indicate this, and that this takes precedence over a narrator’s report because hearing is susceptible to error. This was the belief of a group among the earlier and later generations.

Or someone may believe that the deceased cannot hear the living addressing them, because he believes that His words:

“Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear,”

indicate this.

Or someone may believe that Allah does not marvel, as Shurayh believed, because he holds that marvelling arises only from ignorance of the cause, whereas Allah is exalted above ignorance.

Or someone may believe that ʿAlī is the best of the Companions, because he believes the hadith of the bird to be authentic, and that “the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘O Allah, bring me the one most beloved to You among Your creation, to eat some of this bird with me.’”

Or someone may believe that anyone who spies for the enemy and informs them of the military expedition of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace
