Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Forgiven errors in independent reasoning occur in both categories of questions—those concerning transmitted reports and those concerning knowledge—as has been explained at length in several places. For example, someone may believe something to be established on the evidence of a verse or hadith, while remaining unaware of other evidence that counters that conclusion and clarifies the intended meaning. Such is the case of someone who believes that Isaac was the son to be sacrificed, based on a hadith he believes to be authentic; or someone who believes that Allah cannot be seen because He says:

“Vision does not encompass Him,”

and:

“It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil.”

Similarly, Ā’ishah cited these two verses to deny that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had seen Allah, although they support that conclusion only through the generality of their wording.
