Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

His mighty Book and through the words of His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. For this purpose He revealed the Books and sent the messengers.

Allah Most High says:

“He has ordained for you the religion He enjoined upon Noah,” down to His words, “turns to Him.”

He also says:

“Ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: ‘Have We appointed gods besides the Most Merciful to be worshipped?’”

And Allah Most High says:

“We never sent a messenger before you without revealing to him: ‘There is no god worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me.’”

It is authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“We prophets have one religion, but our laws differ.”

All the messengers thus agree upon the religion they share, both in the fundamentals of belief and knowledge—such as faith in Allah, His messengers, and the Last Day—and in the fundamentals of practice, such as the general deeds mentioned in Surahs al-An‘ām, al-A‘rāf, and Banī Isrā’īl. These include His words:

“Say, ‘Come, I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you: do not associate anything with Him’”—the three verses;

“Say, ‘My Lord has commanded justice. Direct your faces towards Him at every place of worship’”—the verse;

“Say, ‘My Lord has only forbidden shameful deeds, whether openly or in secret’”—the verse;

“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him”—through to the end of the injunctions;

and His words:

“Say, ‘This is my way: I call to Allah with clear insight’”—the verse.

Calling to Allah and worship encompass the utmost love for Allah and the utmost humility before Him. Whoever humbles himself before Him without love is not a worshipper. Rather, He must be the ultimate object of love; thus one must not love
